Houndstongue
(Cynoglossum officinale L.)

Growth Habit: Biennial, rosette formed on the ground the first year, flowering stalk elongates the second year.

Leaves: Velvety to the touch, basal, broad lance-shaped. Upper is narrower, pointed, clasping stem.

Stem: Heavy, erect, usually branched aboce to 3' tall.

Flower: Dark red, rarely white, 1/4" diameter in terminal clusters.

Roots: Taproot.

Seeds: 4 flattened but-like nutlets, each 1/4" long with short barbed appendages.

Reproduction: Seeds.

Biological Controls: None used in Yellowstone County at this time.

Herbicides: Escort.
